Inspiring, developing and connecting the brass players of the future

The Brass Festival Weekend

Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th June, 2018

to include:
  • Street Brass
  • Jazz Café
  • Young Musician Competition
  • Professional Concert

In July, 2017, there were two days of music making, run by the Cotswold Edge Brass Festival team.

Saturday, 8th July:

Saturday saw the inaugural, fun and informal Solo and Ensemble Competition, held at the British School, Wotton-under-Edge.  Our aim was to give players of all abilities and ages the chance to perform in an informal but supportive environment, to get positive feedback and the chance to win some great prizes.  This was not a pressured, formal or scary competition; it was a chance to have some fun, perform in front of your family and friends and learn from the experience.  There were three categories: Primary Ensemble, Open Ensemble and Open Solo; the Primary Ensemble groups performed a set piece - Across the Stars and was aimed at learner ensembles.  The Open categories performed their own choice pieces and were not restricted.

In the evening we hosted the first Cotswold Edge Brass Festival Jazz Café.  Through our links with top professional musicians we were joined in the Wotton Town Hall for a great social evening of top quality music and entertainment.

Sunday, 9th July:

Sunday saw the return of the renowned Cotswold Edge Brass Festival Workshops and Masterclasses.  This took place at Rednock School, Dursley.  We received rave reviews from our first two workshops, and this summer's was going to be even bigger and better!

The day was a series of activities for players of all ages and all abilities, led by professional brass players and experienced tutors.  For younger players there was the return of our fun story telling through music.  There were masterclasses with professional musicians on a range of brass instruments and an opportunity to ask them for help and support with any aspect of playing.  We also prepared ensemble pieces to perform in the Gala Concert

The Gala Concert was held at The Chantry Centre on Long Street, Dursley.  This is the opportunity for participants to show off what they had learnt during the day.  They appeared alongside guest professional players performing inspirational solo pieces and entertainment from the Wotton Silver Band.
